Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over North America looking for the morning’s top performers and the horses that just may be peaking at the right time for a top performance in the afternoon.  Some of the horses that we track, you will know.  Some others, though, you may not know — yet. Here is a closer look at today’s work sheet:

  1. Taperge is a 3YO roan filly by Tapit who ran a game 2nd in the Commonwealth Oaks at Laurel Park on Sept. 30 in her last out. She was beaten just 3/4 length by a good one in Rymska in the 11/8-mile test on the grass. Before that, she won an allowance at Saratoga in August. Keep an eye out on this very talented and still inexperienced filly, who is trained by Chad Brown. She is capable of running a big one soon. Today, she worked a half-mile at Belmont Park in :47.44, which was the 2nd best time out of 31 to go the distance.
  2. Threefiveindia, who ran a game and tough-beat fourth in the G2 Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland in his last out on Oct. 6, worked for trainer Chad Brown at Belmont Park today. He went a half-mile in :48.44, which was 12th best out of 31 to go that far. This one was beaten less than a length by Whitmore, who ran in the BC Sprint in his last. Keep a close eye on this one’s return to the track, too.
  3. Curly’s Rocket, a 2YO colt by Into Mischief, may be a rising star that you will want to add to your stable mail.  This one ran a game 4th in his debut at Santa Anita on Oct. 21, beaten about a length for all of it. He went 5-wide in that 51/2-furlong debut on the dirt and will certainly benefit from that experience. This one is trained by Bob Baffert, so the odds won’t be great. But this one looks to have some talent, too. He trained on Thursday at Santa Anita, and went a half-mile in :48.60 handily over the fast dirt surface, which was the 9th best time out of 41 to go the distance. Watch.
  4. Peace is a 2YO colt by Violence and is owned by Spendthrift Farm and Town & Country Racing. Trained by Richard Mandella, this one has a runner-up finish to Mourinho (a super talented one in the barn of Baffert) in a MSW event at Santa Anita on Sept. 30. Peace cost $280,000 at the OBS 2YO In-Training Sale in April and looks to be getting ready for a top performance soon. He went 6Fs at Del Mar on Thursday in 1:13.20. An endurance work to put a little more air in the lungs. Keep an eye out for this one. Could be any kind.
  5. Sheikh of Sheikhs, a very talented 4YO colt by Discreetly Mine who has not raced all year, got an interesting work at Churchill Downs on Thursday. He went 5Fs in a blistering :58.80 and that was the bullet of the day at the distance. This one has not been seen since running at Aqueduct last December, but he has been training regularly at the Churchill Downs Training Facility in Louisville. The last time he showed up in the afternoon, he was trained by Todd Pletcher, but he was sold for $95,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Horses of Racing Age Sale in July 2016 and may have changed hands since. We will check on this one, but he has five regular works here since Sept. 30 and now appears about ready for a race. If you will remember this one, he ran 6th in the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in 2015 and then was a nice third in the 2016 G3 Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream (won by Awesome Banner) and fourth in the G2 San Vicente Stakes that year (won by Nyquist), as well. Is he back?
