Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:
- Allured, a 3YO son of Flatter trained by Chad Brown, may be one to watch in the near future. This colt has races 5 times so far in his career, with 3 seconds and a third. The lat time out came on Oct. 5 at Belmont Park, when he ran second in just his second run of this year. Today, the colt worked over the “Big Sandy,” going an easy half mile in :48.89. That was 23rd of 54 to go the distance, but this one may be ready to step it up next time out. That will be the third start off a layup. A good angle for this barn.
- Instilled Regard, a 3YO son of Arch who won the Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds in impressive fashion this Spring, is now in the barn of Chad Brown and he worked at Belmont Park this morning. He went a half mile in :48.82, which was the 20th best time out of the 54. It was his sixth published work since his last performance in the Pennsylvania Derby — when he ran 9th behind McKinzie. In 9 starts to date, this one has a record of 2-2-1 and career earnings over $404,000. Look for improvement the next time out.
- Raging Bull, a wonderful 3YO colt by Dark Angel and a winner of 4 of 6 races to date, worked this morning at Belmont Park, as well. This one went 4 furlongs in :48.82, as well, which was the 20th best time. The only time this one has missed the board came in his last race — the G2 Hill Prince at Belmont Park on Oct. 6. Ran fifth that day as the odds-on favorite. Went extremely wide in that 11/8-mile event over the inner turf, but only lost the win by less than 21/2 lengths. Look for a strong comeback by this one. A talent.
- Gronkowski, who made a splash in his first run in this country when he was second behind the great Justify in the G1 Belmont Stakes, was back in action for trainer Chad Brown this morning. He went 5 furlongs in 1:00.86, which was the 2nd best time out of 5 to go that far. The son of Lonhro has not raced since finishing 6th in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sept. 29. Working his way back to you now, and may be tough when he shows up next.
- Dueling, a 2YO son of Violence and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, worked at Santa Anita this morning. The colt — who ran 6th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs last time out — went a half mile in :52 flat. That was 17tho of 19, and simply a chance to stretch the legs after the return to the West Coast. This one has a win and 2 seconds in 4 career starts to date, and the run in the BC Juvenile was not bad at all. Bears watching.
- Battle of Midway, a multiple Graded Stakes winner and winner of the Comma to the Top Stakes at Santa Anita in his last out, worked at the “Great Race Place” this morning, as well. He went 5 furlongs for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer in a nice time of 1:01 flat. That was the 5th best time out of 21. Not bad for a horse that was at stud duty last year. What a nice horse.
- Flying Scotsman, a 2YO son of English Channel and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer for Calumet Farm, worked this morning at Santa Anita. This one, coming off a nice win at Santa Anita on Sept. 29, went 6 furlongs on the dirt track in 1:16 flat. That was 3rd out of 5 to go that far. Won by a nose last time out going a mile over the sod. Showed a lot of speed, grit and grind. Don’t be shocked if this one turns out to be OK for Calumet Farm.
