Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country.  We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers.  Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know.  Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.  We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:

  1. Carrizo, a 2YO filly by Paynter and trained by Steve Asmussen, is off to an impressive start to her young career. On debut at Churchill Downs in September, she broke her maiden, and then returned on Nov. 9 to run second in her first try at allowance company. This morning, she was back on the Churchill Downs main track and turned in a nice 5 furlong work in 1:02.40. That was the 4th best time out of 7 to try the distance. Owner Mike Rutherford purchased this filly as a weanling at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $55,000. He kept her when she didn’t meet her reserve price a year later at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Now, it looks like a brilliant decision. To date, she has earned $49,300 in just two starts.
  2. War Treaty, a well-bred, 2YO son of Scat Daddy who fetched $550,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Sale, has not yet found his running legs or his niche. In the first two career starts, he has run a 7th and a 8th. The last effort came on Nov. 11 at Churchill Downs when he ran 11/16-miles over the grass course for trainer Bill Mott and his well-heeled connections of WinStar Farm & the China Horse Club. He worked at Churchill Downs this morning, as well, going 5 furlongs in 1:03 flat. That was the 6th best time out of the 7. It will be interesting to see where this one shows up next.
  3. He’ll Do, a 2YO, Florida-bred son of Mark Valeski, is coming off a 4th place finish in the Juvenile Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park West for trainer Tom Proctor. That effort followed a nice win up at Delaware Park in October. On Monday, he worked over the track at the Fair Grounds, going 5 furlongs in 1:01.80. That was the 5th fastest time out of the 15 to make that distance. It was his second published work in New Orleans since Nov. 27, and he should be ready to roll soon.
