Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:
- Hidden Ruler, a 3YO colt by Gemologist and trained by Dallas Stewart, won at first asking at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 16 — despite a disastrous start. Hit the gate coming out. Bumped with a rival shortly thereafter. Fell off the pace and then was steadied in traffic at the 3/16ths pole. Still…Closed to get up by a head going just 6 furlongs. For a first timer. That was impressive. And, worth noting. Today, the colt was back in serious mode, working a half mile in :48.40 at the Hot Springs, AR racetrack. The time was the 7th best out of 26 to go the distance. It was his first published work since the race. This one cost $70,000 as a 2YO at the OBS April Sale a year ago. In one race, he earned nearly $50,000. Could be a good one. Take note.
- Air Strike, a 4YO Street Sense colt trained by Phil D’Amato, has not raced since finishing 6th in the G2 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. That race was the worst finish of his career, which has seen the colt compile an impressive record of 2-2-1 in just 7 career starts. He got his 6th published work since that last race today over the inside dirt training track — while major review and renovations are being conducted on the main dirt track — this morning at Santa Anita. He went 5 furlongs in 1:01.20. That was the bullet move out of 11 to go the distance. Looks ready for a return soon.
