Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:
- Jehozacat, a 4YO Tapit filly trained by Arnaud Delacour for the owner/breeder Roy & Gretchen Jackson, worked his morning at Tampa Bay Downs. The filly, who has not run since finishing 7th in the Boiling Springs Stakes at Monmouth Park last May, has been returned to serious training since Jan. 22. She got her fifth published work today, going 3 furlongs in :38.60 — breezing from the gate. That was the 8th best time out of 9 to go the distance. This one’s mom is a multiple Graded Stakes winner, and captured nearly $2 million in purses. Precious Kitten won the G1 Gamely Stakes at Hollywood Park in May of 2008. She won the G1 John C. Maybe Handicap at Del Mar in 2007. She won the G2 Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs in 2006. So, there are plenty of reasons to try to get some “Black Type” for that pedigree. Plenty of green reasons.
- Gardenista, a 3YO Curlin filly trained by Delacour for the same connections, has a win and a third in her abbreviated career to date. Broke her maiden at first ask in October at Delaware Park. Just came back to run third in an allowance at Tampa on Feb. 10. Got her second published work since that race today, going a half mile in :50.40. That was 33rd best out of 38. May be ready for the second attempt off the layup soon. Bears watching this one.
- Tez, a 3YO son of The Factor and trained by Tom Amoss, is my “Horse to Watch,” for today. This one has run three times in his career, and finished the 2018 season with a second and then a third. The last outing was at Churchill Downs, on Sept. 21. Finished behind an Ian Wilkes colt by the name of Ready to Forgive — who could turn out to be a good one. Tez got his second published work since Feb. 17 today. He went an easy half mile in :50 flat. That was 27th of 38, but the time was not the thing. This one has some talent, and bears watching. And, he could end up being a nice grass colt, as well.
- Chocolate Martini, a wonderful 4YO Broken Vow filly who journeyed all the way from the claiming ranks into a Graded Stakes winner in 2018, worked this morning at the Fair Grounds for trainer Tom Amoss. The upset winner of the G2 Fair Grounds Oaks a year ago got her 4th published workout since Jan. 28 this morning, going a half mile in :49.60. That was 23rd of 36 to go the distance. Still aways away, but gearing up. All the best.
- Roiland, a 3YO Successful Appeal colt trained by Tom Amoss, ran a super 3rd in the G2 Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds in the last out and now is being pointed to the Louisiana Derby. This guy has had an issue with the gate in the past, and he broke poorly again in the Risen Star. But he closed strongly, and now has a real chance as the distances start to get longer. He worked this morning, going a half mile in :48.20. That was the 6th best time out of the 36. Watch this one. Don’t go to sleep. He’s gaining on them.
- Serengeti Empress, winner of 4 of 6 career races to date for trainer Tom Amoss, also got to stretch her legs this a.m. at the Fair Grounds. This 3YO daughter of Alternation is a speed ball that can take her run a long way, and she is now gearing up for the Fair Grounds Oaks. Worked a half in :49 flat this a.m., which was 14th best of the 36. Her win in the G2 Rachel Alexandra in New Orleans on Feb. 16 was spectacular — considering that she had been off since November. Look out.
- Lone Sailor, a 4YO son of Majestic Warrior and also trained by Amoss, worked 5 furlongs this a.m. He went the distance in 1:00.60. That was the 2nd best time out of 18 to go that far. Look for improvement off his 6th place finish in the G3 Mineshaft to open the ’19 season. This guy wasn’t entirely cranked up, IMO, and he will benefit from that race greatly in the next.
