Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:
- Spinoff, runner-up to By My Standards in the G2 Louisiana Derby in his last out for trainer Todd Pletcher, worked this morning for the Kentucky Derby. The 3YO son of Hard Spun, who has never missed the board in 4 career starts to date, went 5 furlongs at the Palm Beach Downs training center in South Florida. Covered the distance is a spiffy :59.99. That was the 3rd fastest time out of 4 to clock that distance today. Has speed to utilize and could be a forward factor in the Derby.
- Cutting Humor, winner of the Sunland Derby in his last start and now a contender for the Kentucky Derby, as well, for trainer Todd Pletcher, worked at the Palm Beach Downs training track today, too. He went the 5 furlongs in a tad better, covering the ground in :59.58. That was the bullet move out of the 4 to make the distance. In 6 career starts, he has hit the board 5 times. The only miscue came in the G3 Southwest Stakes two starts back at Oaklawn Park. Held off the late charge of Anothertwistafate in Arizona. Lots of people like Anothertwistafate, who appears It will be interesting to see what strategy Pletcher employs with this one. He’s another that appears to like the front.
- Inspector Lynley, a 6YO son of Lemon Drop Kid and trained by Shug McGaughey, worked this morning at Belmont Park. The horse — who won a listed Stakes race at Aqueduct on April 7, after running a disappointing 6th i the G2 Muniz Memorial Handicap at the Fair Grounds — went a half mile over the dirt track in :50.99 time. That was 10th best of 11 to go early on. Pure maintenance move. In 24 lifetime starts now, this one has a 6-5-4 record and has earned nearly $700,000 in purses. Be nice to see this one get to that elusive $1 million mark.
