Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:
- Point of Honor, a 3YO Curlin filly trained by George Weaver who just ran 4th in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks to Champagne Anyone, worked this morning at Belmont Park. The filly — who won her first two career starts — went an easy half mile in :50.09, which was the 17th best time out of 35 to go that far. It was her 4th published work since the last race, and she appears to be sitting on go. Watch out for this one in the next gate appearance. Could be sitting on a good one.
- Outshine, a 3YO Malibu Moon colt trained by Todd Pletcher, has not raced since finishing 9th in this year’s Wood Memorial — a race won by Tacitus. Before that, though, he had a very strong second in the Tampa Bay Derby to the same horse. And, he looked like he may be a contender for this year’s Triple Crown races. This morning, the colt breezed at Belmont Park — going a half mile in :48.85. That was the bullet move out of 33 to go that far. In 5 career starts to date, he has two wins and a second. Look for this one to pop up in the entries soon. Bears watching. Could bounce back with a good one.
- Covfefe, a 3YO Into Mischief filly with a ton of ability and speed, worked this morning at Churchill Downs for trainer Brad Cox. She breezed an easy half mile in :49.40 — which was the 17th best time out of 31 to clock the distance. She started the 2019 campaign with a nice allowance win at Keeneland in April. Now has 2 wins in 3 career starts. Look for more. She could be spectacular.
- Jersey Agenda, a 3YO Jersey Town colt trained by Steve Asmussen, was given a big chance to hit the KY Derby Trail earlier this spring. After winning two of the first three career starts, he ran 8th in the Southwest Stakes; 5th in the Rebel Stakes; and then 7th in the Arkansas Derby. Worked his morning at Churchill Downs. Covered a half mile in a slow :52.20 — which was the 31st best time out of 31 to go that far. Not to worry. This barn often throws in a very slow breeze, from time to time, to clear the air and brain. Should return next week with a better one.
- Flameaway, winner of the Tampa Bay Derby in 2018 and a highly-regarded son of Scat Daddy, worked at Keeneland this morning for trainer Mark Casse. The colt — who most recently ran 6th in the G3 Ben Ali Stakes in Lexington — worked 4 furlongs in :49.60 — which was the 11th best time out of 19 to go that far. Should show up in a Stakes event soon, either at Churchill Downs or at Woodbine. He is an Ontario-bred.
- Current, a brilliant chestnut colt with a flaxen mane, worked at the Palm Beach Downs training center in South Florida this morning for trainer Todd Pletcher. This 3YO son of Curlin won the G2 Dixiana Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland last Fall with a sudden burst of late energy. Came back to run 7th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Most recently, this guy ran 5th to Maximum Security in the Florida Derby — in a rare dirt try. Got his third published work since that race this morning, going 4 furlongs in :48.65. That was the bullet move out of 6 to clock the distance. Watch for this one to return to the races soon. Probably, will show back up on the sod.
- Opry, a 3YO Declaration of War colt who won the G3 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga last summer as a maiden, worked at Palm Beach Downs this morning, as well. This one has not been out since finishing 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs last November. Worked a half today in :48.75 — which was the 2nd best time. This was the 4th published work since returning to serious training in mid-April. Probably a couple more breezes away from a return to the races, yet.
- Catapult, a 6YO son of Kitten’s Joy and trained by John Sadler, worked this morning at Santa Anita Park. This one most recently ran 2nd in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Stakes on the grass at Santa Anita. Was beaten a nose by Ohio in that one. Worked 6 furlongs over the dirt track today, covering the distance in a time of 1:14.40. That was the best of 1 to go that far.
