Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
- Gingham, a 3YO daughter of Quality Road and trained by Team Baffert, worked this morning at Santa Anita. The filly — who just ran 2nd in the G2 Las Virgenes Stakes at “The Great Race Place” last time out — went an easy 3 furlongs in :38.40. That was the 14th best time out of 15 to clock the distance. It was her 2nd recorded breeze since the last race. In 7 career starts now, she has 2 wins, but 4 seconds. The only time off the board was a 4th place finish behind Bast in the G1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos on Dec. 7. Look for more out of this one soon.
- Eclair, a 3YO filly by Bernardini and trained by Baffert, worked this morning at Santa Anita, as well. This gal — who won the Golden Gate Debutante Stakes in her last start on Nov. 29 — got her 9th published work of 2020 this morning. She went a very nice 5 furlongs in 1:00.20. That was the bullet move out of 18 to clock the distance. Eclair cost a nice $420,000 to purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita 2YO Sale a year ago. In 6 starts since, she has 2 wins and 2 thirds and has garnered $75,000+ in the bankroll. More to come. Stay tuned.
- High Velocity, a high propane 3YO son of Quality Road and trained by Team Baffert, as well, worked at Santa Anita this morning, too. The Graded Stakes winner went 6 furlongs in 1:12.60. High Velocity was the only horse to travel this distance in work mode this morning. In his career, to date, this one has 2 wins and 2 thirds in 4 career starts. Started the race record with back-to-back wins, including a triumph in the G3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar last November. Has since run 3rd in both the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity and the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes to roommate Thousand Words. This one can run. Can run fast. The question is how far can he run fast. Future will decide if he is distance or sprint. But we know now that he can run.
- Another Miracle, a 3YO son of American Pharoah and trained by Gary Contessa, worked at Tampa Bay Downs this morning. The colt — who ran 3rd in the Breeders’Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last November — breezed 5 furlongs over the main dirt track in 1:02.20. That was the 2nd best time out of 3 to clock the distance. In 6 career starts so far, this one has a 2-1-1 mark and has already earned over $218,000. He cost $210,000 to purchase as a yearling at the 2018 KEE September Yearling Sale. Look for more soon.
