As first reported by “The Daily Racing Form’s” Mary McGee, jockey Miguel Mena was killed on Sunday night when he was struck by a car while walking on I-64 in East Louisville.
According to the report, Mena — who won the rider’s title at the Fair Grounds several times and has been a top rider on the Kentucky circuit in recent history — was struck as a pedestrian on the busy Interstate highway between the exchanges of Blankenbaker and Hurstbourne Lane.
The news, according to McGee, was confirmed by trainer Al Stall, Jr., who was a close friend of Mena, and one of the conditioners that utilized his riding services on many occasions in Kentucky and in Louisiana.
Mena, who was 34 years old, rode 2,079 winners in his career, which was often described as brilliant.
