Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working their best and ready for a key race. Here is a look at today’s top works:
- Dragon Drew, a son of Get Stormy who has unfortunately for him has caught a couple of soggy grass courses in the last couple, worked for trainer Buff Bradley this morning at Churchill Downs. He went 3 furlongs on the dirt in :37 flat, which was the 5th fastest time out of 13 to go the distance. This one has been entered at Churchill Downs for an allowance event on May 31, and he should be salty in that spot. This one won the Black Gold Stakes immediately after breaking the maiden at the Fair Grounds and was a nice 4th in the G3 Transylvania before a 13th in the G2 American Turf. Watch for this one.
- Combatant, a son of Scat Daddy who ran 18th in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Steve Asmussen, worked at Churchill Downs this morning. He went 5 furlongs in 1:01.60, which was the 3rd best time out of 19 to go that far. While he has won only one race to date, he has second place finishes in the Remington Springboard Mile, the Smarty Jones Stakes, the G3 Southwest Stakes. And, he has a third in the Rebel Stakes and a fourth in the Arkansas Derby. Look for his return at a racetrack near you.
- Rizzoli, a talented son of Violence who is trained by Ian Wilkes, broke his maiden last time out at Churchill Downs after a nice second and third to start the career. He worked this morning at Keeneland impressively. He moved 5 furlongs in 1:01.80, which was the second best time out of 7 to go that far. Keep an eye on this one. Could be any kind of good.
