Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
- Seeking the Soul, a 7YO “War Horse” for the barn of trainer Dallas Stewart, worked at Churchill Downs this morning. The ole’ soul breezed 3 furlongs over the main track in :36.40. It was the 3rd best time out of 3 to clock the distance. This guy — who has chalked up over $3.5 million in earnings over an illustrious race career — has not run since finishing 7th in the G1 Pegasus World Cup back in January. Back when the world was a different place. This is his first published work in quite some time, too. On the return trail now. Last win came last June when he won the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs. He does like it here at home.
- Gold Street, winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park earlier this Spring and one of the best “mudders” around, worked at Churchill Downs this morning for trainer Steve Asmussen. The 3YO son of Street Boss — who has finished 9th in the G3 Southwest Stakes and 8th in the Oaklawn Stakes since his last win — went 4 furlongs in :50 flat. That was the 34th best time out of 39 to go the distance. If it turns up wet? Better take a look at this one.
- Long Range Toddy, a 4YO son of Take Charge Indy and now in the barn of Dallas Stewart, worked at Churchill Downs this morning, as well. The colt breezed 4 furlongs in :48.80, which was the 21st best time out of 39 to go that far. Ran very well in an allowance at Oaklawn Park in the last outing. Coming on the rail in the late stages. Look for him to be at his best next time out. I’m looking for the return. Next win could push him past $1 million in earnings, too.
- Field Pass, the Maryland-bred winner of the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park back in March, worked at the Churchill Downs’ Training Center in Louisville this morning. The 3YO son of Lemon Drop Kid worked a half mile in :48.60. That was the 7th best time out of 19 to go the distance. It was the 7th published move since his win in the Ruby. Don’t know what may be next for this one. Accomplished on both turf and poly now. But in 8 lifetime starts, he does have 3 wins and 2 seconds. Good one. Maybe better? We shall see.
- Somelikeithotbrown, a 4YO son of Big Brown and trained by Mike Maker, worked at the CD Training Center today, too. Went 5 furlongs in 1:00.40. That was the 3rd best time out of 6 to go that distance. In the last two starts, this one has a win and a second at Turfway Park, including a runner-up in the KY Cup Classic. Loves, loves, loves the poly. Was spectacular in winning the 2019 version of the Jeff Ruby over it. Now, got his 7th work since that last race. Six of those at Turfway Park. Maybe ready to go North, if Woodbine gets open soon. We shall track.
- Lady Apple, a classy 4YO daughter of Curlin and trained by Team Asmussen, worked at Keeneland this morning. Went an easy 4 furlongs in :51.80. That was the 11th best time out of 13 to clock the distance. In 14 career starts to date, she has a record of 6-2-1 and has earned over $1 million in purses. Last time out, was a toss. Ran 8th in the G1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park. In the 2020 debut, though, she nipped Serengeti Empress in Houston. Talent there. Watch for her return.
- Guarana, one of the best fillies in the land a year ago and now a 4YO daughter of Ghostzapper, worked at the Palm Meadows Training Facility in South Florida this morning for trainer Chad Brown. The gritty and talented speedster breezed 4 furlongs in :49.20. That was the 7th best time out of 19 to test the distance and the clock. It was her 8th published work since returning to serious training in late March. This one has not run since running 2nd in the G1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx last September. In 4 career starts, she has 3 wins and a runner-up. Two of those wins in G1 company. Can’t wait to get her back.
- Tiz the Law, who just may be one of the favorites for the remodeled 2020 Kentucky Derby, worked this morning at Palm Meadows, as well. The 3YO son of Constitution went 4 furlongs in a maintenance move time of :50.20. That was the 18th best time out of 19 to clock the distance. It was his 6th published work since Tiz the Law won the G1 Florida Derby in dominating style. In 5 career starts now, he has 4 wins and a third. Be interesting to see when trainer Barclay Tagg will return to the afternoon fray and get ready for the First Saturday in September. Should be a direction soon.
- Tizamagician, a 3YO son of Tiznow and trained by Richard Mandella, worked at Santa Anita this morning. The colt is entered in an allowance race at “The Great Race Place” on May 22. Will be his first test in the afternoon since running 4th in the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes to Thousand Words on Feb. 1. Be interesting to see how this one performs this weekend. I’ll be watching. Keenly.
- Hard Not to Love, a 4YO daughter of Hard Spun and runner-up in the G1 Beholder Miler last time out for trainer John Shirreffs, worked this morning at Santa Anita. Went 4 furlongs in 1:01.40. That was the 35th best time out of 59 to go that distance. Maintenance move. In the last 4 starts, this one has the 2nd and 3 wins. Has a G1 and G2 win in the mix, too. Good right now. Very good. Watch for her next outing.
