We are back looking at the daily workout schedule from around the country. Every day (Some days?), we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
We are back…Take a look:
- Sumter, a 2YO son of War Front and out of the More Than Ready mare A Little Bit Sassy, may be one to keep an eye on in the near future. This one has raced only once, finishing 5th in the career debut at Del Mar on July 25. Went 5.5 furlongs on the dirt in that one and lost to a horse trained by the embattled Bob Baffert, by the name of Murray. That one ran off to win by nearly 11. This guy is trained by the HOFer Richard Mandella and probably wants the sod and probably wants more ground. I would not hold this first race against him, at all. And, look for more when the trainer finds the right spot. Worked 3 furlongs today at the “Surf,” going the distance in :35.80. That was the 4th best time out of 6 to make that move over the main dirt track. Stay tuned here.
- Ryhthm and Grace, a 3YO daughter of Distorted Humor and a Pennsylvania-bred trained by John Shirreffs, worked at Del Mar today, as well. This one went 4 furlongs in :48.20. That was the 6th best time out of 20. This gal has not won yet in 5 career starts, but does have a second and two thirds. Has speed. Loves the grass. And, has talent. Light bulb has yet to go off here. But when it does? Look out.
- Soothsay, the impressive winner of the G3 Indiana Oaks and another daughter of Distorted Humor, worked on the Left Coast this morning. She went an easy half-mile in :49.40, which was the 15th best time out of the 20. In 4 career starts to date, this one has 3 wins and a second. And, her win at Indy Grand was most amazing after rearing and hopping at the start. Got up in the last jump to win, amazingly. This one is the real deal. The. Real. Deal.
- Bango, a 4YO son of Congrats and trained by Greg Foley, has quickly developed into one of the best sprinters in the entire Midwest, and, perhaps, the US. This one has won three Stakes in a row and is likely to be pointed to the inaugural running of The Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 18. Worked this morning at Ellis Park. Went 5 furlongs in 1:01 flat. That was the 7th best time out of 16 to go that far, in a pure maintenance move. Look out here. Just getting good now.
- Sconsin, a very talented 4YO filly by Include and also trained by Foley, worked at Ellis Park this morning, as well. She went 5 furlongs in 1:01 flat, which was the 7th best time out of the 16. This closer just ran 2nd to Bell’s the One in the Roxelana Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 19. Never could get by that one, but is flattered now by Bell’s big win at Saratoga in her last rip. Sconsin won the G3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs just two back and was 2nd to Gamine in the G1 Derby City Distaff on KY Derby Day. Talent here.
- Golden Pal, the 3YO son of Uncle Mo and trained by Wesley Ward, worked at KEE this morning. Went 5 furlongs over the track’s turf course, and timed the distance in 1:01.80. That was the only breeze over the sod at this distance. In 5 career starts now, this one has 3 wins and 2 seconds. Won the 2021 debut on July 15 in the G3 Quick Call Stakes at Saratoga. That makes three wins a row for this standout, who captured the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at KEE last November, as well. More to come. Stay tuned.
- Helium, a 3YO son of Ironicus and trained by Mark Casse, worked at Saratoga this morn. Breezed 5 furlongs over the main dirt track in :59.55, which was the bullet move out of 9 to clock the distance. This guy — who won the G2 Tampa Bay Derby before running 8th in this year’s KY Derby — could be in the midst of a career change. Last time out, he ran a mile over the turf at Churchill Downs in the War Chant Stakes. Was 3rd behind both Next and Royal Prince. Options now abound for this one. Return to the dirt. Stick to the sod? We shall see.
