Editor’s Note:
Just a week after the world’s attention was turned to the Breeders’ Cup in Lexington and the sun kissed each winner with an ample dose of warmth, the American racing attention turned to Churhcill Downs on Saturday.
There was little fanfare. There was no sunshine. Each winner was greeted with an ample dose of mud pies and temps that hovered around freezing.
But don’t shed a frozen tear. It wouldn’t make it down your cheek, any way. These guys — and gals — are used to tough conditions and survival of the fittest. These guys — and gals — are the ones that have elevated from the ranks of the claimers to make headlines and glory the old-fashioned way.
Each horse — and all those connected thereto — have earned their way to stardom and to the big stage. Not with pomp and circumstance. Not with pedigrees of glory and ribbons of joy. Not with an easy road. Each of these horses have struggled along life’s journey and have made their way to the winner’s circle with guts, if not glory.
So, it was fitting that the conditions be exactly what they were on Saturday. Nothing has come easy. Not for these guys — and gals. And, they were all right at home.
Here’s a look at the Claiming Crown that was held at Churchill Downs on Saturday, through the incredible eyes and lens of our very own Holly M. Smith. She captured the moments.
