According to a source very close to the situation, Ellis Park will not be open to the general public on Opening Day — the 4th of July — but the live races will go on as planned.

Only those persons licensed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will be allowed on the licensed premises today.

According to our sources, the plan is to reopen the historic Grandstand to the track tomorrow — Friday, July 5.

Our source wrote: “Lightning strike knocked out a key piece of equipment so we have to close the grandstand. Grandstand should be open tomorrow. There will be racing today, but the facility only open to KHRC licensees.”

Another source told The Pressbox that the lightning strike impacted the running water at the track and all parts of the grandstand.
