Editor’s Note:
A year ago, we started a new program called the “Donation Play of the Day” at Horseshoe Indianapolis. After reflecting on how much heart, soul, sweat and tears that “The Shoe’s” Vice President and General Manager for Racing, Eric Halstrom, puts into raising both awareness and funds for the Homeless Veterans of Indianapolis, I decided it was time to join the team, too. It was time to ante up. It was time to help.
So, a year ago, we started a wager that we installed and completed a couple days of week throughout the long meet — that begins today in Shelbyville, IN and will run to the middle of November. At the end of the 2025 meet, we had generated about $1,500. Near the end of the meet, I went up and placed a $200 win ticket, as well. Luckily, that pick hit and we donated 100% of those proceeds, as well.
This year, we are back. After all, something can’t become a tradition unless you carry it on. And, on. And, on.
So, since the meet begins today, we should launch the 2026 “Donation Play of the Day,” as well.
2026 Donation Play of the Day — Tuesday, April 7:
We will play $10 across the board on Velveteen (3) in the 4th race. The 4YO filly is the 2-1 favorite for trainer Brian Williamson and returns as a beaten favorite in this 6-furlong Maiden Claiming event. This gal ran 2nd last time out at the Fair Grounds and flashed speed that day. Here’s hoping she can make the lead and not look back.
After all, last Sunday was Easter. The bunnies were out in force. Might as well have Velveteen here today to celebrate the return of the rabbit.
If you feel compelled, play along with us. We would love to have you join the effort to raise needed funds to support the people that have supported us the most — our veterans.
Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
