Here’s a look at the picks for the Opening Night of the 2024 Spring / Summer Meet at Churchill Downs, which will launch on Saturday:

st: 8-7/5//2/1/6…Shortlist (8) gets the nod in ole’ lid-lifter at Churchill Downs in this year’s Spring/Summer meet, which will feature the 150th Kentucky Derby. This 10YO gelding drops from $16,000 claiming to the all-time lowest level in this, his 65th career start. Ran super just two starts ago at Turfway Park. Has run here 9 times before with a 1-1-4 mark. Drop has to help here. Leader of Men (7) will make his 10th start over this surface. Has never won before, but does have 4 seconds and 1 third. May run 2nd again. Trainer wins with .31% when cutting back from route to a sprint distance. Barn also wins with .23% of the last 71 when returning as a beaten favorite. I bet the 8 across the board and then box the 8-7 in the exactas. I will key the 8-7 over/under the 5 in two smaller units.

nd: 6-7/3//1-4-5-8…Barnaby (6) drops from a $50,000 level all the way to the $10,000 mark here. Barn wins with .32% when making this drastic of a move. Wins with .23% in the claiming ranks overall. If right? Should win. I bet the 6 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 6-7 and then key the 6-7 over/under the 3 in two smaller units.

rd: 7-3/5-4/6/1-2…Pioneer Parade (7) won a nice race just two starts ago and just could finish off the job last time out. Has run here twice and has a win on the saddle. Gets the meet’s top rider up and this one should be a tough out against the likes of these. I bet the 7 across the board and the box the 7-3 in the exactas. I will key the 7-3 over/under the 5-4-6 in two smaller units.

th: 9-7/(17)-(16)/4/7-12/8-(15)/11-10…Outadore (9) looks well-placed if this 5-furlong sprint stays on the sod. Has run over the grass 6 times in his life with 4 wins and 2 thirds. Has run this distance twice, too. Won them both. Will speed off. May just last. Counterstrike (7) has run 10 grass races with just a single win. But that came at this distance, where he has mounted 4 attacks. Besides the win, has 3 thirds, to boot. I bet the 9 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 9-7 in the exactas. I will use the 17-16 if the Main Track Only comes into play.

th: 6-2/5/8-1//4-7/3…Chryso Alogo (6) gets the blinkers on for this occasion, and this trainer wins with .18% of the last 11 to put the shades back into play. Should improve with the 2nd start off a layoff and has a win over this main track, too. Like. Bledsoe (2) has run in two Stakes events in the first 4 outings and has a win on the first try last April. Should be ready to go speed early. I bet the 6 across the board and then box the 6-2 in the exactas. I will key the 6 over/under the 2-5-8-1 in two smaller units.

th: 7-1/3/10-4-8-6/2…Cashmeup (7), trained by horse woman Linda Rice, who normally just steals Kentucky runners to take back to New York, is the pick here. Nearly won for $15,000 last time out at Turfway Park and now drops to the career low level. Should be a threat late, on a track that can help the closers. Coal Boss (1) has a shot. This one gets the blinkers back on, and has run here with blanks after 4 shots. But picks up the meet’s top rider. Chance. I bet the 7 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will key the 7 over/under the 1-3-10-4-8-6 in the exactas. More with the 1-3 than the rest.

th: 4-2/(15)/8-(13)-(12)-3/11-(14)/5-10…Hola Gata (4) is a daughter of Kitten’s Joy, one of the best turf sires to stand the career here. This one is trained by Chad Brown, the best American turf trainer. Gets the meet’s top rider. Adds up for me. I bet the 4 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will box the 4-2 in the exactas. I will key the 4 over/under the 2-8-3-11 in two smaller units. I go with the 15 if off the turf.

th: 1-10/5/4-11/9/2-6…Just Basking (1) draws the rail in this 11/4-mile MSW special. Has run twice before and closed well in each. Just ran out of ground. Should not run out of dirt here. Needs to get to the wire first with this one. Ava’s Look (10) has a shot for young trainer Riley Mott. Ran 2nd last out at Oaklawn Park. Coming late in that one. Barn wins with .19% in the 2nd time with Lasix. I bet the 1 across the board and double down on the win wager. I bet the 1-10 exacta box and then key the 1-10 over/under the 5-4-11 in two smaller units.

th: 6-9/5-8/2-4-3/1-7-10…Roxelana Stakes…The first Stakes race of the meet is a 6-furlong test over the dirt. Dazzling Blue (6) gets the nod here. Has never missed the board in 6 career starts, which has included 3 Graded Stakes. Trainer and rider have teamed up to win 2 of last 6. Looks to have the class speed of the race. Looks tough. I bet the 6 to win/place/show and box the 6-9 in the exactas. I will key the 6-9 over/under the 5-8-2-4-3 in the exactas.

th: 2-7-5/3-9/1-4-11/8/2…The Saturday finale is a 6-furlong sprint over the main track and I will line with my Upset Special of the Day — Corri Felice (2). This one is listed as 8-1 in the ML. Ran poorly last out, but that was last May — about a year ago. First race was a near win. I’m thinking this gal may return to the first effort in style. I bet the 2 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 2-7-5 in the exactas. I will key the 2-7-5 over/under the 3-9 in two smaller units.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
