McLean’s Selections for Turfway Park on Birthday Night — Wednesday, Feb. 11

It’s my birthday. A big one, too. I turn the big, or is it “declining?”, 70 on this very day. Give all the credit to my mom, the lovely Elizabeth — who is 95 and still kicking up heck whenever she wants and still cooking a mean fried chicken dinner, too. According to folk lore, it took me about 24 hours of hard delivery time to finally arrive on the premises of the Woodford County Memorial Hospital. According to the truth, I was born in the African-American section of the segregated delivery rooms. There were no rooms left in the white inn. And, it didn’t matter to my mom — the most gracious and loving human I have ever known. And, of course, it sure as hell didn’t matter to me.

While it took me awhile to arrive, I hit the ground running and been tearing it up ever since.

When asked once by a group of church ladies what they were going to do with a rather independent “Gene,” my mom just smiled and said:

“We are going to love him and keep him.”

She repeats that every time you ask her to this day.

Look forward to getting “home” to Midway this week and seeing mom. I’m sure the chicken will be frying and the love will be flying.

We may even watch a race or two, as well.
