Here’s our picks for “Special Selections” at Keeneland on Friday, Saturday and Sunday:

Friday:

9th: 1-3/6-4/5/7//2…G3 Doubledogdare Stakes…Raging Sea (1) gets the nod in the G3 Stakes, that will cover 11/16-miles over the main dirt track. This 4YO daughter of Curlin has gone 3-1-1 in the first 7 starts for trainer Chad Brown and is coming off a G3 win in the Comely Stakes last November at Aqueduct. Nearly won the 2023 debut after a lengthly layoff last year and gets a rider who has won on this one before. In three previous runs here? Has gone 1-0-1. Has two thirds in the G1 Alcibiades Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies over this track in 2022. Working good for the return. Short stretch may help with a possible leg fatigue in the final furlong. Scylla (3) has three career starts with two impressive wins and a neck loss 2nd on the resume. Gets a rider who is familiar here and has won with her before. Barn wins with .20% of the last 239 to make the 2nd start off a layoff. May be a tick sharper than the top selection, due to the race on March 17. I bet the 1-3 to win and place and then box these two sternly in the exactas. I will key the 1-3 over/under the 6-4-5-7 in two smaller units.

Saturday:

2nd: 2…I would love to see this 3YO daughter of Union Rags carve out a great trip on the first asking for a HOF trainer. Has turned in the morning works and now tries to impress in the afternoon. Could be a square price, too. Listed at 12-1 in the ML. Love to have those odds. Gets Irad up and had a very sharp work last time out. Take a look here. I bet the 2 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 2 over/under the “all button” in the exactas.

6th: 10-11/2-8…This is a 1-mile Turf allowance and I go to the outside for my top 2 contenders, led by Sacred Wish (10). This one nearly won both the G3 Pebbles Stakes at Santa Anita, and the G3 Valley View over this sod to end the 2023 year. The 4YO daughter of Not This Time is training well for the return to action here. Gets a HOF rider who has booted this one home before. Should love this track and the conditions. Pleasant Passage (11) picks up Irad Ortiz, Jr. and that should help this one navigate the trip. Has been this distance 4 times so far. Has a 2nd and a 3rd. May get the trip here. Stalker and closer type. I bet the 10-11 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 10-11 over/under the 2-8 in two smaller units.

7th: 3-7…This is a 7-furlong MSW even for the 3YO fillies and I line up with Soundbite (3). This daughter of Audible cost $350,000 at the 2023 OBS 2YO Sale in April. Will make the first start here for the best trainer in the game today. Dam has 2 winners from 6 previous runners and 1 Stakes winner. Training very well and gets an up-and-coming rider. Halstyn Rose (7) has run twice before and has two 3rds for the work. Top trainer has won 2 of 7 here so far this meet and a new rider gets up for the first time. Classy pilot. Look out. I bet the 3-7 across the board and then box these two in the exactas.

8th: 4-7/10-11…G2 Elkhorn Stakes…This endurance match will be contested at 11/2 miles over a very soft and giving turf track, and, as such, I will lean to the European — Bold Act (4). This one is the heavy ML favorite for trainer Charles Appleby, and should be. Comes off a win in Dubai last time out over the sod and beat some good ones there. Ran here and won the G3 Sycamore in only previous try over this same sod. Came late to win here last October and expect rider Frankie Dettori to employ the same strategy here. Looks the best. Winning Spirit (7) is shipping in from Germany, where this one won over 11/2 miles last August. New trainer engaged here for the 4YO who will make the first stop on this side of the big pond. Trainer wins with .20% of the last 35 to ship in to the U.S. Has a shot. Loves soft going. I bet the 4 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I box the 4-7 sternly in the exactas. I will key the 4-7 over/under the 10-11 in two more smaller units.

9th: 4/3-1-9/7//2/5-6-8…Ge Ben Ali Stakes…I line up with Kingsbarns (4) in my only “Key Play of the Day.” This 4YO son of Uncle Mo has truly only run one bad race in his youthful life — the 2023 Kentucky Derby, when he was a disappointing 14th after setting right off the lea for the first half of the race. Je came back with a 2nd in the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park last year and then won an allowance at Gulfstream Park the March for trainer Todd Pletcher. Working lights out for this one and could add a 2nd Graded Stakes win to the resume here. Gets Luis Saez up here, and he has won with this one before. Look out, folks. I bet the 4 to win/place and then double down on the win wager. I will key the 4 over/under the 3-1-9-7 in the exactas. More with the 3-1-9 than the rest.

Sunday:

2nd: 4-2…This is a MSW special and I will line up with Clever Again (4). This is a 2YO son of American Pharoah and the Stakes-winning dam Flattering. Tons of pedigree. Has worked well here for a HOF trainer and should move out of the gate quickly for this 4.5-furlong test for 2YOs. Dreamaway (2) could upset the apple cart with a 2YO filly by Flameaway. This one trained by the most recent 2YO trainer extraordinaire — Wesley Ward. Bullet works here, aplenty. One to beat. I bet the 4 across the board and then box the 4-2 solidly.

3rd: 9-10-3/8-7…Segesta (9) gets top billing in this 1-mile MSW event over the sod. Daughter of Ghostzapper, who is one of the best sires in the game today. Has run twice for turf expert Chad Brown, and had a very nice 2nd last time out at Tampa Bay. Any improvement at all? Gone. I bet the 9 across the board and double down on the win wager. I will box the 9-10-3 in one set of exactas. I key the 9 over/under the 10-3-8-7 in two smaller units.

6th: 7…Dragoon Guard (7) is the ML favorite, but I would love to see this 3YO son of Arrogate pop the MSW level here for trainer Brad Cox. Ran once last year. Nearly won, losing at the wire by a skinny neck. Gets Lasix for the first time and the barn wins with .34% of the last 229 to pick up the meds. Barn’s go-to rider is up and they have gone 2-1-1 in the last 5 outs together. I bet the 7 to win/place and then key the 7 over/under the “all button.”

8th: 1-9…I go with Ludwig (1) here for trainer Phillip Bauer and his home team at Rigney Racing. This 5YO gelded son of Mastery won two in a row at Saratoga last Summer before being shut down. Had the winter months off, but blew a bullet at Churchill Downs on April 13. Looks primed and ready to fire a big one here. I bet the 1 across the board and then double down on the win wager. I box the 1-9 solidly in the exactas and then key the 1 over/under the “all button,” too.

9th: 2-1-4…this 1-mile Turf event is for the MSW level and the 3YO fillies. I gear up with Muneera (2). This Shadwell Stables homebred is by Mohaymen and trained by Brad Cox. This will be the first lifetime start, but the works are spot on. Should not have a problem with surface or length. Look out at a square price. Day Dawning (1) is a first out stater for a high-percentage trainer, who has gone 1-0-1 in 5 starts here this meet. Picks up a HOF rider for this inaugural voyage. Work on March 31 was spot on. Risk Threshold (4) is the ML favorite for the world’s best turf trainer. In this country, any ole’ way. Trainer and rider have teamed up to go 2-0-1 in the last 6 outs. I bet the 2-4 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas.

Good Luck & All the Best / Gene
