McLean’s Updated Handicapping Statistics

It has taken about a month to get caught up on my handicapping statistics, that I fell behind on. Without excuses.

It was not easy. It was not fun. And, it was definitely tedious, boring and consuming.

But it is done. And, I pledge (hopefully) to not fall behind like that again.

Going into today at Horseshoe Indianapolis, all my “Stats” are now updated for your review.

There is some good to report. There is always some “bad” to report and strive to improve on. And, true to form, there is some consistency.

Here’s a look:

I’m not overly pleased with my win rate, after 916 races handicapped this year. I have selected 283 winners, but that computes to only 30.90% win rate. That’s 2 percentage points less than the favorites do, on average. And, less than acceptable by my standards.

As usual, I got off to a slow start this year at Turfway Park. I’m a self-admitting horrid handicapper on the AW surfaces. And, that played out this year and left a pretty big hole for me to fish out of in the first 6 months. I won 110 races out of 400 at Turfway Park this winter, which is a miserable 27.50% win rate. That left me with a lot of work to do to climb back jump to today’s mark of 30.90.

Hopefully, we are better the 2nd half of the year.

Overall, my top pick has finished in the money 561 out of the 916 races, for a solid “Hit Rate” of 62.24%. I look for that number to rise over the next few months, too.

And, overall, my “Key Play of the Day,” selection has gone 36 wins, 20 seconds and 17 thirds out of 97 selections. That is a win rate of only 37.11%, and that surely will go up over the remainder of 2024. But my “Hit Rate” is 75.26% on the board. I’ll take that.
