(Free Drop Billy walked the shed row of trainer Dale Romans)
After winning the G1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity in October of 2017, Free Drop Billy was thought to be the one.
The one to bring a possible Kentucky Derby to owner Dennis Albaugh and his family — who have invested so much love and money to run after the “Run for the Roses.”
The one to finally bring a possible Kentucky Derby win — for the very first time — to trainer Dale Romans. The winningest trainer in the history of the famed Churchill Downs. But a trainer who has yet to feel the sprinkle of Derby Day Champagne.
The one to finally give a Louisville native trainer their first Kentucky Derby winner — as in ever.
Free Drop Billy was thought to be, at least for awhile, the one.
It did not come to pass, as things turned out.
The win in the Breeders’ Futurity turned out to be his last win. But the son of Union Rags always gave all and always gave to all his best.
Romans is still looking for the one. So are the Albaughs.
But wouldn’t it be nice if it came from a son of Free Drop Billy? He is now standing at stud at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington and his first foals are on the ground.
It would be fitting.
