(Flying on air)

By Holly M. Smith:

Like any modern day love affair, it started on social media.

Tom’s Ready was on the 2016 Kentucky Derby trail via New Orleans.  His trainer, Dallas Stewart, posted a video of him sleeping on Twitter, and I knew this was the horse for me!

“Tom” went on to run 2nd in the Louisiana Derby, behind a little horse named Gun Runner.   I was not credentialed at that point, but anytime I got on the backside during KY Derby week, I visited with “Tom,” and that was the case until he retired in 2017. His running style gave me grey hairs, and put me on the verge of heart attacks.

“Tom” was the type of horse that you could always pet or love on, but he liked to have his tongue pulled, too. Sometimes, it was just a ploy to try and bite.

He also has really unique ears, and a striking resemblance to a horse I owned as a kid.

Tom’s Ready ended his career as a three-time stakes winner — including stakes wins at Churchill Downs and Belmont Park. He also handed Runhappy a loss that ended his 6-win streak.

After retiring from racing, Tom’s Ready stood a brief time at Spendthrift and has since moved to Louisiana.

Here’s a look at Tom’s Ready:
