Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
- Bonny South, winner of the G2 Fair Grounds Oaks earlier this year and most recently 2nd to Swiss Skydiver in the G1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga, worked in preparation for the G1 KY Oaks on Friday. The Munnings filly, trained by Brad Cox, went 4 furlongs in :48.20. That was 21st best out of 94 to go that far. This gal will be running late. And, this gal will be running strong. Is she good enough in a world class field this year. Don’t bet against it.
- By My Standards, one of the top older colts in the country, worked for trainer W. Bret Calhoun at Churchill Downs on Friday. The 4YO son of Goldencents went 4 furlongs in a brilliant :46.20. That was the bullet move out of the 94. Last time out, this one was 2nd in the G1 Whitney Stakes. Before that, he was 2nd in the G2 Stephen Foster to Tom’s d’Etat. Before that? Won the G2 Oaklawn Handicap and the G2 New Orleans Classic. Star.
- Crazy Beautiful, a 2YO daughter of Liam’s Map and trained by Ken McPeek, worked at Churchill Downs on Friday. Undefeated in two starts to date, this one went 4 furlongs in :48.60. That was the 37th best time. Coming off a win in the Runhappy Debutante Stakes at Ellis Park. We haven’t seen the best of this one, yet.
- Necker Island, a 3YO son of Hard Spun and now trained by Chris Hartman, prepared for the KY Derby on Friday at Churchill Downs. Went 4 furlongs in :48.40. That was 29th best. In 10 lifetime starts, this one has 2 wins and 3 thirds. The two wins? Came at Churchill Downs.
- Shared Sense, winner of this year’s Indiana Derby before taking a butt-kickng in the Ellis Park Derby, worked at Churchill Downs on Friday for trainer Brad Cox. The 3YO son of Street Sense went a half mile in :48.20. That was 21st best. Be interesting to see where this one lands next.
- Speech, a beautiful Florida-bred daughter of Mr Speaker, worked at Churchill Downs on Friday in one of her final preps for the KY Oaks. The talented 3YO breezed 4 furlongs in an eye-popping :47.60. That was 8th best. In 7 career starts, she has yet to miss the board with 3 wins, 3 seconds and a third. Not out of the question. Even against these monsters.
- Tempers Rising, another filly training up to the KY Oaks, worked a half mile at Churchill Downs today. Breezed the distance in :47 flat. That was the 2nd best time out of the group of 94. Wow time. she has only 1 win in 10 starts for the career. Is 0-for-5 this year. But she is trained by Dallas Stewart — the giant slayer — and has run some good ones. May hit the board at a price. A huge price.
- Art Collector, winner of the Ellis Park Derby and the G2 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes in the last two outings and now a prime contender for the 146th running of the KY Derby, got to stretch the legs at Churchill Downs today. The son of Bernardini went 5 furlongs in 1:00.80 — and looked super doing it for regular jockey Brian Hernandez. “Pretty text book,” is what trainer Tommy Drury texted after the move. Game on.
- Major Fed, another contender for the KY Derby and another to be trained by a Louisville-native in Greg Foley, worked 5 furlongs early, early, early today. Breezed the distance in :59 flat. That was the fastest move out of the 36 to go the distance. Peeking through the dark morn, it looked good. It looked nice. It looked awesome. More to come.
