(The great Monomoy Girl. She is coming back / Photos by Holly M. Smith)

Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country.  We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers.  Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know.  Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.  We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:

Editor’s Note:

What a day of works at Churchill Downs this morning. Got a text late on Friday night that 2018 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner and Champion filly Monomoy Girl would be working this a.m. in Louisville.

Sure enough, she did.

Although her time didn’t show up in the early “works” on Equibase from Churchill Downs, she went along very nicely. Went in company and on the outside of Marquee Prince, and worked along at a short distance before galloping out very strong.

In a word?

Nice.

Very nice.

According to my good friend Kevin Kerstein, “The Champ” was clocked at 3 furlongs in :36.80 — “on trainer Brad Cox’s watch.”

Sure enough, Holly was there to capture the moments.

And, we got a bonus, too.

The mucho-talented 2YO colt Dennis’ Moment, who broke his maiden at Ellis Park recently by nearly 20 lengths for trainer Dale Romans, also worked this morning.

Holly’s eye and lens caught them, too.

Photos to come, very, very soon.

  1. Dennis’ Moment, one of the most talented 2YO colts in the world these days and trained by Dale Romans, worked at Churchill Downs this morning. The Tiznow colt went 4 furlongs in :49.60 — which was the 39th best time out of the 81 to go the distance. After ditching ridder Robbie Albarado in the career debut, Dennis’ Moment aired by 191/4 lengths at Ellis Park on July 27. The colt cost $400,000 to purchase at the Fast-Tipton Saratoga August Sale a year ago. He is owned by the Albaugh Family Racing stable. And, he is legit. For real. The deal.
  2. Frolic More, a 3YO son of More Than Ready and trained by Dallas Stewart, is coming off a 6th place finish to Mr. Money in the G3 Indiana Derby at Indy Grand on July 13. Before that, though, he won and finished second in two allowances at Churchill Downs. This morning, he worked at Churchill Downs, going a half mile in :50 flat. That was 48th best of the 81. Look for more next time out. Caught a monster in the last out.
  3. Grit and Curiosity, a 3YO son of Macho Uno and trained by Peter Miller, may be one to put on your “Watch List.” This maiden ran 2nd in the first two career starts this year at Santa Anita and then Churchill Downs. In the last out, though, he was 8th when he was 5-wide and well back the entire time. That race was won by Debating. A throw out for me. I’m watching for the return race. Worked this a.m. at Churchill Downs, going 4 furlongs in :48 flat. That was the 5th best time out of the 81. Nice work. Very nice.
  4. Mae Never No, a 3YO filly by No Nay Never and trained by Wesley Ward, worked this morning at Churchill Downs, too. She went a very nice half mile in :47.80 — which was the 3rd best time out of 81 to mark the distance. Although winless in 2 starts this year, the filly has a 2-0-4 record in 7 career starts and looks to be about ready to fire again soon. Watch out.
  5. Seven Trumpets, impressive winner in the last out at Ellis Park, worked at Churchill Downs this morning for trainer Dale Romans. Went a half mile in :48.60, which was the 14th best time. In 14 career starts now, he has a 4-3-1 record and nearly $500,000 in purse earnings. May be ready for another step forward soon.
  6. Coal Front, a 5YO Stay Thirsty ridgling trained by Todd Pletcher, simply has not been the same since returning from a win in the G2 Godolphin Mile in Dubai in March. Since back, he was 7th in the Met Mile and 3rd in the G3 Monmouth Cup Stakes. Before? Won the G3 Mr. Prospector and the G3 Razorback. Tough trip,. But worked at Saratoga this morning. Went 4 furlongs in :49.67. That was 46th of 69 to go the distance. Be nice to get this one back — fully.
  7. Promises Fulfilled, winner of the G2 John A. Nerud Stakes at Belmont Park in the last out for trainer Dale Romans, worked this morning at Saratoga. Went 5 furlongs in a brisk :58.85 — which was the bullet move out of 36 to go that far. Looks back. And, firing.
