Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
- War Path, a 2YO son of War Front and trained by Bob Baffert for the ownership team of George Jacobs, worked this morning at Del Mar. The 3YO colt went 3 furlongs in :37.60, which was the 9th best time out of 16 to clock the distance. In 5 career starts, four of which have been this year, the colt has run 2 seconds. Those have come in the last two starts. Looks like this one could be about ready to snap the maiden.
- United, a 5YO son of Giant’s Causeway and trained by Richard Mandella, worked at Del Mar today, as well. The multiple Graded Stakes winner — who has scored wins in three straight G2 events — went 5 furlongs in a brisk :59.80. That was the bullet move of the day out of 20 that tested the distance. It was over the dirt track, too, which is the normal work surface for this turf winner. Speculation is that the connections may try the dirt surface soon. Time will tell. But…this one is good. Especially right now.
- Passing Out, a 4YO daughter of Orb and trained by HOFer Shug McGaughey, worked this morning at Saratoga. This gal — who has run back-to-back thirds in Stakes company — went a half mile over the dirt training track in :48.72. That was the 2nd best time out of 7 to go the distance.
- Crystal Ball, a 3YO daughter of Malibu Moon and trained by Team Baffert, shipped East after breaking the maiden at Santa Anita in June and promptly ran a game 2nd to Paris Lights in the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks in mid-July. Lost that one by just a head in a 5-horse field. But she beat two really good ones in Antoinette and Tonalist’s Shape. Worked today at “The Spa,” going 5 furlongs in a time of 1:00.23. That was the 2nd best time out of 3 to go that distance over the main track. Look for more when this one gets back to the afternoon action. Looks sharp right now.
