Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet. We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working well:
- Roadster, a 3YO Quality Road colt trained by Bob Baffert, worked this morning at Santa Anita. The colt — who has two wins and a third behind Game Winner in the G1 Del Mar Futurity last September — is coming off a victory in the 2019 debut at Santa Anita on March 1. Looked in cruise control that day and got the praise of jockey Mike Smith. This morning, he went 5 furlongs in 1:01.80. That was 15th best of 29. Look for Stakes company and looking for Derby points next time out.
- McKinzie, a 4YO Street Sense colt trained by Baffert, as well, worked at Santa Anita on Tuesday. Went 6 furlongs in 1:13.40. That was the bullet move out of 4 to go the distance. The 5-time winner in just 8 career races has not been out since running second behind the ill-fated Battle of Midway on Feb. 2 in the San Pasqual Stakes. Look for his return soon, as well.
- Flor de La Mar, a 3YO Tiznow filly trained by Baffert for the Godolphin Stables, worked brilliantly this morning at Santa Anita. Went a half mile in :47.80, which was the 2nd fastest time out of 14 to go the distance. In two career starts, this one — which cost $500,000 to purchase at the Fast-Tipton Saratoga Sale in 2017 — has a win and a fifth in an allowance race on March 2. Look for more. Soon.
- Much Better, a 3YO ridgling by the now departed Pioneerof The Nile, is coming off a hard-fought 4th place finish in the G3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in his last out. Set lightning fast fractions in that one, yet held tough all the way to the wire for Team Baffert. He has stayed behind in New York and looks to be pointed now toward the Wood Memorial, maybe. Worked today on the dirt training track at Belmont Park in :47.55. That was the bullet move out of 31 to go the distance. May not love the extra ground. But he does have some zip. Watch out at a 1-mile distance.
