We are back looking at the daily workout schedule from around the country. Every day (Some days?), we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
We are back…Take a look:
- Zawish, a 2YO daughter of Mshawish and trained by Helen Pitts, worked this morning at the nearly abandoned Churchill Downs. The talented youngster — who is a perfect 2-for-2 to begin the career and has wins at both Churchill Downs and Turfway Park now — breezed 4 furlongs in a maintenance move-like :50 flat. That was the only time recorded for the distance, as most horses and their trainers have moved out for the winter months. If you are looking for and talking about bargains, look no further than this filly. She was offered at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale a year ago. She was brought home by her breeders at Rock Ridge Thoroughbreds after not reaching her reserve price, and was hammered down at $1,000. She has now earned over $73,120. How about that? How. About. That? Merry Christmas.
- Al Qahira, a 2YO daughter of Cairo Prince and trained by Bill Mott for owner Helen Alexander, may be a youngster who will want to watch for at a racetrack near you. Horse to Watch Notice. This gal — who didn’t meet her reserve price of $160,000 at the 2020 KEE September Yearling Sale and was brought home, as well — ran a terrific 2nd in her career debut at Churchill Downs on Nov. 20. Was beaten a length that day at the wire, despite an awful start that pushed her to nearly last at the start. She worked today at Gulfstream Park and went 4 furlongs in :48.53. That was 5th best of 25. Won’t be long before this one finds her way to the winner’s circle, IMO.
- Cazadaro, a 3YO son of Street Sense and trained by Steve Asmussen, worked at Oaklawn Park this morn. This guy — who won his last outing at Churchill Downs on June 19 and won the G3 Bashford Manaor Stakes in Louisville back in June of 2020 — breezed 5 furlongs in 1:01.60. That was 10th best of 19 to go the distance. In 7 career starts, this one has a record of 3 wins and 2 seconds. Has earned over $240,268. Homebred of Stonestreet Stables could be really good if he can stay on the racetrack. Look for more out of this one. Looks Stakes quality. And, first dam? Wild Gams? Was multiple Graded Stakes winner — including the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes. Pedigree there, too.
- Sumter, a 2YO son of War Front and trained by Richard Mandella, worked at Santa Anita this morning. The homebred colt owned by the Bass Stables broke his maiden last time out at Del Mar by nearly 4 lengths when running 5 furlongs over the sod. Had run 2nd two times before. Went 5 furlongs at the “Great Race Place” today in a time of 1:00.40. That was 3rd best of 16. Look for more out of this one soon. The first dam? A Little Bit Sassy? Multiple Graded Stakes placed and went 3-6-1 in 19 career starts for trainer Michael Matz. Lots to like here.
