We are back looking at the daily workout schedule from around the country. Every day (Some days?), we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country. We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers. Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know. Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.
We are back…Take a look:
- Sequist, a 3YO daughter of Nyquist and trained by Dallas Stewart, worked at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans this morning. This one — who broke the MSW on debut at Colonial Downs last July — went 5 furlongs in 1:01.40. That was the 4th best time out of 10 to go the distance. It was the 4th published work since being returned to serious training in December. After the inaugural win, this one was quickly dipped into deep waters. She ran 4th to Echo Zulu in the G1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. She ran 3rd to Juju’s Map in the G1 Alcibiades at Keeneland. She ran 5th to Echo Zulu, again, in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar. Connections may let her wade back in soon, but don’t be surprised if this one is on the “Road to the KY Oaks” soon.
- Starrininmydreams, a 4YO son of Super Saver and another trained by Stewart, worked at the Fair Grounds this morning, as well. Went 5 furlongs in 1:00.60. That was the 2nd best time out of the 10 to negotiate the distance. After winning the first two in the career, this one was put on the “Road to the KY Derby” a year ago. Despite a 3rd to King Fury in the G3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland last Spring, this one has not measured up to Grade Stakes company since. Talent here. Just needs to find the right spot.
- Red Knobs, a 3YO son of Union Rags and trained by Dale Romans, worked this morning at Gulftream Park in South Florida. This one — who is entered for an allowance event this coming Saturday and will get the services of standout rider Tyler Gaffalione — blew out a half mile today in :50.20. That was the 17th best time out of 22. Last time out, this one was 8th in the G2 KY Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27. Before that, he was 3rd in both the Street Sense Stakes and the G3 Iroquois under the Twin Spires. Big hopes here. Is it up for it? Soon to find out.
- Giant Game, the giant horse in the Romans’ barn since his impressive 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November at Del Mar, worked at Gulfstream Park this morn, as well. Was super impressive, going 5 furlongs in :59.76. that was the bullet move out of 5 to clock the distance. It was the 5th published work since being returned to serious training the middle of December. The last three works? All bullets. Game on.
- Bubble Rock, a 3YO daughter of More Than Ready and trained by Brad Cox, worked at Keeneland this morning. The winner of the G3 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park last October went 3 furlongs over the AW training track in a time of :37 flat. That was 6th best out of 8 to go that distance around the bull ring. Last time out, she was 12th in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar. But she had never been worse than 2nd in the three races before. More to come here. Stay tuned.
- Yuugiri, a 3YO daughter of Shackelford and trained by Rodolphe Brisset, certainly appears to be one that will have a chance to earn her way into contention for this year’s KY Oaks discussions. After all, she won the MSW at Churchill Downs prior to running 2nd in both the Rags to Riches Stakes and the G2 Golden Rod Stakes under the Twin Spires, too. Was runner-up to Dream Lith (1 length), and Sandstone. Went 4 furlongs at Oaklawn Park today in :49 flat. That was 27th best out of 93. It was the 4th published work since late November. Look for more out of this one. Distance should not be an issue.
- Winterwood, a 3YO son of Maclean’s Music and trained by Brisset, is our next addition to the “Horses to Watch” list. This one has yet to break the maiden, but has a couple of 3rds on the resume. Was beaten just over a length by the likes of Spartan Army and Chasing Time (know that one?) in the career debut, and returned to lose by just a couple of Surfer Dude. No threat in the last outing here in late December, but this one has some talent. Worked at Oaklawn Park this morning, too. Went 5 furlongs in 1:01.80. That was 17th best of the 40. Look for more out of this one. Very soon.
- Red Danger, winner of the Pulpit Stakes at Gulfstream Park for trainer Brian Lynch in the last outing on Dec. 3, was back in work mode this morning at the Palm Meadows Training Center. Went 4 furlongs in :50 flat. That was 5th best out of 11 to test the distance. This son of Orb has a 3-1-0 mark in 6 starts and should be ready to graduate to the big leagues with authority very soon. Let’s go. My “Kentucky Derby Sleeper.”
- Soothsay, a 4YO daughter of Distorted Humor and the winner of the G3 Indiana Oaks last year, worked at Santa Anita this morning for HOF trainer Richard Mandella. This one — who has won 3 of 4 for her owners and has never been worse than 2nd — went 4 furlongs in :49.60. that was 9th best of the 15 to check in with the clockers. That was the 6th published work since mid-December. Should be ready for more. Soon.
