Every day, we scour over the work tabs of racetracks around the country, searching for tidbits and practice sessions that may have meaning to you, as a handicapper. Some of the horses that we track, you will know.  Some of them, though, you will not.  We hope to keep you posted on some of the more interesting workouts around the country, as they prep for upcoming races. Here’s a closer look at the work tabs of the past couple days:

  1. Farrell, a talented 3YO filly who ran herself into contention for this year’s Kentucky Oaks with three straight Stakes victories at The Fairgrounds (Silverbulletday; G2 Rachael Alexandria; and the G2 Fairgrounds Oaks), was back on the track at Churchill Downs this a.m. for trainer Wayne Catalano. She breezed 4Fs in a brisk :48.20, which was the 2nd best time out of 29 to go the distance.  It was the filly’s 6th published work since July, as she prepares to return to the track in the afternoon.  She hasn’t been in a race since her disappointing 14th place finish in the Oaks. Keep an eye out for her return.
  2. Literary Critic, another talented and well-bred 3YO filly who was a feature of our “Pedigree of the Day” segment earlier this summer, worked 4Fs at Del Mar on Wednesday.  She covered the distance in :49.60, which was 14th best out of 26 to go that far. This City Zip filly, who is out of a Storm Cat mare, is owned by Pam & Martin Wygod and is trained by Clifford Sise.  She broke her maiden in only her second start, going 11/16 miles on the Del Mar turf track and winning by 11/2 lengths.  She could be any kind.
  3. Two Step Blues, is a 3YO filly that may be worth a potential claim slip for those who are interested in such things.  She has run three straight seconds, but was beaten only 1/2 length in her last out on the grass at Gulfstream Park. This daughter of Two Step Salsa is out of a Stakes-winner mare and is an eligible Florida-bred with plenty of top-end speed at the 1-mile distance.
