Every day, we scour the work tabs at racetracks all over the country.  We are looking for workouts that may be of interest and helpful to you — as both race fans and handicappers.  Some of the horses we will be tracking, you will know.  Some of them, you may not know — as of yet.  We will keep a keen eye and stopwatch to see who may be working their best and ready for a key race.  Here is a look at today’s top works:

  1. Speed Freak is a 3YO Orb colt that I have a special fondness for, and a reason to track. He is the first foal of Purim’s Dancer, a fine filly who was Graded Stakes placed and a Stakes Winner that I owned in partnership with three other fine gents at one time. I convinced them to breed her to Orb, a Kentucky Derby winner, and we sold her in foal to him. This was the resulting foal, and colt. While he is yet to run in a race, he had his sixth published work this morning since April 23. He went 5 furlongs at Los Alamitos in a time of 1:01 flat. That was the 4th best time out of 10 to go that distance this morning. Hoping for the best for this one.
  2. Catholic Boy, who was my early KY Derby pick after his win in the Remsen Stakes and fine second place finish to Flameaway in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, is now entered to run in the Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday. He worked early this week, going a half mile in :48.09 at Belmont Park. That was the 2nd best time out of 11 to go the distance. Watch for this one’s return. Talented.
  3. Once On Whiskey, a talented son of Bodemeister trained by Bob Baffert, worked at Santa Anita this morning. He went 6 furlongs in 1:13.60, which was the second best time out of 3 to go the distance. This one ran third on Derby Day in an allowance race, but looks to be cut out to be a good one. Watch for his next run. He is super talented.
  4. Bravazo, who wowed the world with his fast-closing second in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, worked this morning at Churchill Downs for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. The colt powered through a one-mile effort in 1:42.60, which was the best because it was the only work at that distance. This one should be primed and ready to go for the Belmont Stakes now.
  5. Oscar Performance, a 4YO Kitten’s Joy ridgling who last was seen running 9th in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar last November, worked this morning at Belmont Park in preparation for the 2018 debut. Today marked the seventh published work for this one since April 18, and he went 5 furlongs in 1:00.01. That was the bullet move out of 4 to go the distance over the inner turf track. This one, trained by Brian Lynch, should be about ready to run in the afternoons now.
  6. Mia Mischief, a 3YO daughter of Into Mischief who won the G2 Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs on the KY Oaks undercard in her last out, worked this morning at Churchill Downs for trainer Steve Asmussen. She went a half mile in :52 flat, which was the 40th of 41 to go the distance. It was a pure maintenance move.
  7. Midnight Bisou, a 3YO daughter of Midnight Lute whose three-race win streak was snapped in the KY Oaks by Monomoy Girl, worked this morning at Churchill Downs for her new barn connections. She went a half mile in :51.80, which was the 38th best time out of the 41. It will be interesting to see where this one shows up next.
