Ryan Dickey’s Saratoga “Spot Plays” for Wednesday, Aug. 7

By Ryan Dickey:

In the interest of “turning the page”, we are at the half-way point to the Saratoga meet, and today is the day that we turn things around. I have a trio (maybe) of “spot plays” today, and I don’t think we’ll get less than 4-1 on any one of these.

RACE 2 — There’s a heavy favorite on the rail today in #1 BEARS MAFIA, and he will be bet as such. He’s dropping in class to try to graduate today, and has nine starts under his belt, having hit the board four times. His speed figures are among the best in the field, and at 8/5 odds on the morning line, he will be backed by plenty of money. But not OUR money. We are going to go with a horse making his second career start, because we are going to hope that #8 SOBERSICK N SORRY gets out to much better start than in his debut. Sobersick N Sorry missed the break when he stumbled a bit on the off-the-turf — but fast — main track sprint here on July 18th. Trainer Steve Klesaris does much better with his young horses the second time out, and we’ll hope that rings true today. At 8-1 on the morning line, and a big favorite on the rail in this race, the value is on the #8.
RACE 6 — During any meet at Saratoga, you sometimes get a second or third chance with a horse you previously liked but didn’t make enough money with for one reason or another. On July 11th, I liked a horse in the G3 Quick Call Stakes that went off at 11-1 and finished second. Racing again today, #2 ELEKTRONIC is listed at 6-1 on the morning line in a $100k Stakes going 5-1/2 furlongs on the turf. I had mentioned that trainer Linda Rice adding blinkers would help (https://thepressboxlts.com/ryan-dickeys-saratoga-spot-plays-of-the-day/) and it appears as though that trick worked. I expect much less odds today than the 11-1, but anything North of 4-1 would be a bonus. This City Zip colt is my best bet of the day.
RACE 10 –– We’ll need some help with a scratch today because my possible third “spot play” of the day is an AE (also eligible) in the finale. Listed at 6-1 on the morning line, this Chad Brown Temple City filly is looking to race for the first time today. While I am certainly no expert on first time starters, all accounts point to #11 DARLING OF THE SPA being race ready and primed. She’s first up on the AE list, so should any horse in the main body scratch, today could be her day. Workout reports are positive, and if she gets in, could be quite a value play, as other will be backing #3 TELETYPE, #8 SWEET GISEL and #10 GHOSTLY BEAUTY.
Good luck!

The horse broke well today,” Gaffalione said. “I had the horse inside, Dunph, going to the lead and then (Gun It) showed a little bit of speed. When I saw they were intent on going I just tried to get him back and got him to relax. He came back to me nicely and settled well down the backside. Got a little keen going into the far turn and wanted to move a little early. But I didn’t want to take too much away from him so I tried to sit as long as I could. He was waiting on horses down the lane but I kept him at task and there was plenty of horse there.”

“Mark (Casse, the trainer) and his team have done a great job,” Gaffalione said. “They’ve had a ton of confidence in this horse the whole way. It’s just an honor to be able to ride the horse. He’s just so professional, trains great and he’s a pleasure to be around.”
